Instillamed®

Instillation therapy with two-component protection

Forms of chronic cystitis – especially interstitial cystitis (IC) – are rare but serious and, in some cases, extremely debilitating diseases. For many patients, IC means a life of discomfort, with symptoms including frequent urination during the day and night, a constant, and sometimes irrepressible, urge to urinate and burning pain, e.g. in the bladder and in the lower abdomen, urethra and genitals. Depending on the severity of these symptoms, they can impair the patient's whole lifestyle. In addition to purely symptomatic treatment by means of painkillers and medications that suppress the urge to urinate, a therapy that helps to address the cause in order to protect and restore the bladder wall is therefore essential.

Preparations for instillation into the bladder, such as Instillamed®, are the most promising of the various treatment methods at present. This is confirmed by a patient care study with 270 IC patients in Germany. 1

The medical device Instillamed® provides you with an optimised solution and is bringing fresh impetus to the field of instillation therapy.

Chronic cystitis

In medical terminology , acute cystitis refers to the inflammation of a hollow organ - the urinary bladder. A bacterial inflammation of the bladder usually spreads via the urethra into the mucous membrane of the bladder. Since this inside wall protects the urinary bladder from aggressive substances contained in the urine, constant urinary urge and pain while urinating occur as a result of this condition. This form of cystitis can normally be treated effectively with antibiotics.

In chronic cystitis, by contrast, the so-called GAG layer (glycosaminoglycan layer), which protects the bladder, is permanently damaged. This leads to painful symptoms and their progression, such as:

frequent and nocturnal urinationfrequent and nocturnal urination
constant, insuppressible urge to urinateconstant, insuppressible urge to urinate
burning pain, for instance in the bladder and the lower abdomen, in the urethra or in the genital organsburning pain, for instance in the bladder and the lower abdomen, in the urethra or in the genital organs

The active substances in Instillamed®, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate, are natural components of the GAG layer. When administered in combination, they can alleviate the above-mentioned symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

How Instillamed® acts

The common feature of all forms of chronic cystitis is that the symptoms and their progression can be caused by damage to the glycosaminoglycan layer, which lines and protects the inner wall of the bladder.

The active substances in Instillamed®, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate, are natural components of the GAG layer. When administered in combination, they can alleviate the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease by...

  • compensating for the shortage of glycosaminoglycans.
  • inducing intensive regeneration of the GAG layer.
  • restoring the protective function of the bladder wall.

Instillamed® thus addresses causal factors. Chondroitin sulphate and hyaluronic acid play a central role in the mode of action of the GAG layer itself and inhibit the deposition of toxic and irritant substances present in urine.
